1474815 Selectively plasticized segmented polymers EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 Aug 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 38040/74 Headings C3P and C3R Copolymer compositions comprise (a) a block copolymer of formula ABA, ABABA or xB(AB) n yA or a graft polymer with a backbone B and a plurality of A side-chains, where n is an integer of at least 2, x and y are 0 or 1 and A and B are mutually incompatible thermoplastic blocks, where A is an at least partially crystalline block and B is an amorphous block, and (b) a plasticizer having a solubility parameter within 1À20 units of that of block B. Typical polymer blocks A are polyolefins, polycaprolactam, polyethylene terephthalate, poly-(2,3- dimethylenebicyclo - 2 - 2,2 - octane), polyethylene sulphide and polythiacyclobutane. Typical blocks B and (i) polyvinyl aromatics, (ii) polyvinyl acetate and (iii) polyphenyl hydroxy-ether of bisphenol A. Suitable plasticizers (for the B blocks) are phthalates, phosphates, low molecular weight polyesters, polyolefins and polydiolefins and paraffin oils. Examples refer to the plasticizing with various of these conventional types of plasticizers of polyethylene-b-polystyrene- or t-butylstyrene-bpolyethylene (obtained by selective hydrogenation of 1,4 - polybutadiene - polystyrene - or poly - t - butylstyrene - 1,4 - polybutadiene) or of a multi-block copolymer of polystyrene and poly-(piperazine sebacamide). A block copolymer is prepared in Example 7 by reacting polystyrene glycol with toluene diisocyanate and then adding poly(piperazine sebacamide) to yield the multi-block copolymer. |
