1474918 Making sheaths for electric battery plates ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 1 Aug 1974 [2 Aug 1973] 36766/73 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] A machine for making sheaths for electric battery plates from sheets, comprises a magazine 11 from which successive sheets 10 are withdrawn and positioned in front of a flat former 30 which can be advanced by a ram 32, to co-operate with a pair of rollers 35, 36 in the folding in half of the sheets and to carry the folded sheets between a further two pairs of rollers 37, 38 and 43, 44 which fold the upper and lower side edges of the double folded sheets against the former 30, and adhesive applicators 40 located between the pairs of folding rollers 37, 38 and 43, 44 for appling adhesive to said upper and/or lower side edges. The sheets may be preformed with a tongue or tongues at the middle of the or each side edge and the apparatus may include a peg or pegs 50 for folding the or both tongues against one or both side edges of the former. The sheets are withdrawn from the magazine 11 by suction grippers 21 carried by a pivoted tube 20 which can be swung by a ram 22. The sheets, when released by the grippers 21, contact a stop and actuate a switch 24 for controlling the ram 32. The adhesive applicators 40 are controlled by switches 41, 42. A pivoted strip 47 strips the sheath from the former 30 as the latter is withdrawn from between a pair of channel-shaped guides 45 for holding the folded side edges in position. A plurality of pairs of guides 45 are mounted on a rotatable carrier. |
