Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107732/C2/1> wherein A is -CH2-CH2-, R is H, alkyl, aryl, bromo-aryl, acyl, alkenyl or aralkyl, R1 is H, alkyl, aryl, methyl-aryl, bromoaryl or alkenyl, and R2 is H, alkyl or phenyl, the groups R being the same or different, are prepared from the compound <FORM:1107732/C2/2> by treatment with an amine or ammonia, in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst. The OH groups of the starting material may optionally be etherified or acylated before this treatment. Alternatively the keto group may be oximated (with or without prior OH group alkylation) and then reduced, with the CH=CH group to give the product. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic and growth-promoting activity comprise a compound of the first formula given above together with a suitable diluent, and may take the form of a feed or an injection suspension in, e.g. peanut oil.
