A hinge block lodging in a cavity in a major door face, designed to combine the economy of synthetic fittings with the strength and aesthetics of metal work, constitutes a synthetic housing insert (1) reinforced by a metallized synthetic cover plate (5). The housing embodies external friction gripping ribs (2) and holes for the location of hinge levers. The cover plate (5), of metal or metal lined material, preferably metallized synthetic, gives additional clamping confinement of the housing. The cover plate (5) can have inwardly projecting flanges (6) which apply a pincer action to the housing (1), and the cover plate covers the entire exposed housing face.
