Electrodes for use in electrolytic devices consist of an electrically conductive substrate and coating which is resistant to the electrolyte and to products formed during electrolysis. The coating material is metal or metal oxide. The coating contains as occlusions at least one other material which is insoluble in the electrolyte and improves the activity of the coating. The occlusions are pref. of a electrochemical and/or non-electrochemical catalyst pref. a noble metal oxide, non-noble metal oxide, hydroxide, sulphide, chloride, fluoride, carbide nitride, boride, S,C, or PTFE. Typical electrodes have (a) Ni substrate, Ni + P coating are TiO2 occlusions. (b) Fe substrate, Ni coating, NiO occlusions. |
