The residence time of wastewater sludge to be biologically treated in an aeration reactor is intended to be reduced and the wastewater sludge is to be thickened. For this purpose, before it is delivered into the aeration reactor, additional materials are admixed to the wastewater sludge by a mixer element (7) movably arranged in a heat-insulated mixing vessel (4). During the mixing process, the material to be mixed situated in the interior of the mixing vessel (4) is continuously subjected to a reduced pressure. In order during this to withdraw a significant proportion of water from the sludge, at the same time a gas capable of taking up water is passed through the material to be mixed subjected to a reduced pressure. <IMAGE>
