Homopolar generator with toothed rotor - has non-magnetic cooling elements in axial spaces on stator

High speed, high output, homopolar machines have toothed rotors. The stator comprises laminated packets (1) carrying excitation windings (3) near the yoke (2), and output windings (7) in slots at the stator bore. Cooling ducts for removing heat pass axially through the packets close to the bottom of the winding slots. The spaces (8) between the packets (1) are filled with thermally conducting non-magnetic material, for example aluminium laminations of the same shape as those of the main core. They act to remove heat both from the core and winding and from the turbulent air generated by the toothed rotor, and transfer it to the cooling tubes. Full size plates (5) may be placed between adjacent excitation coils (3) to improve the cooling in this area also.
