1474018 Mattresses etc.; adjustable beds WATKINS & WATSON Ltd 24 May 1974 [13 March 1974] 11942/73 Headings A4J and A4M A bed comprises a plurality of support members 23-26 mounted on a frame 18, at least one of the members 23-26 being adjustably movable by means of a bellows 28, 31 or other bag-like inflatable device, and a plurality of inflatable sacs 38 mounted on and operatively connected to the support members 23-26. The support members comprise a head section 23 slidably pivoted on rollers 30 guided in tracks on the frame 18 and supported by struts 27, a seat section 24 rigidly secured to the frame 18, and a thigh section 25 hinged at one edge to the seat section and at its opposite edge to a foot section 26. The foot section 26 is guided for vertical movement by scissors links which connect it to the frame 18 to ensure that it remains parallel to the frame 18. The sacs 38 are arranged in separately inflatable groups associated respectively with the support members 23-26. Opposite sides of each support member 23-26 are formed respectively with inlet and exhaust headers. Air, which may be heated, at low-pressure is passed from the inlet header and into inlet nozzles provided one in each sac. Air is exhausted from the sacs to atmosphere either directed through a rubber tube which may be manipulated to control rate of outflow, or from the sac outlets into the exhaust header. Air is fed by supply pipes 51 to the bellows 28, 31. The tops of the sacs may be water vapour permeable but do not allow escape of an appreciable amount of air. The frame 18 is mounted on a wheel base and is tiltable about a horizontal axis, at 19, by a link 22 and screw-jack device 21. The sacs 38 have extension flaps which are secured around bars having sponge on their upper faces. The invention is stated to have application to chairs and couches. |
