1436755 Moulding rackets FISCHER GmbH 17 May 1973 [8 June 1972] 23634/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division A6] The handle 1 and frame 2 of a racket have a core formed by the radial expansion of at least one elongate member 10, 101 within surrounding longitudinally orientated reinforcing fibres 9 and are laterally stiffened by supporting ties 4, 5 substantially lying in a plane perpendicular to the striking face of the racket. In the embodiments described the elongate members 10, 101 are arranged in a mould so that each passes completely around the frame and returns to the same side of the handle, the members crossing in the connecting portion 21 of the frame. The members may be inflated with air during curing of the structure or may be filled with foaming plastics composition, e.g. polyurethane. Alternatively (Fig. 6, not shown) the members may comprise cords of a foaming plastics composition. A woven fibrous layer 11 is disposed between the expansible members and the resin impregnated reinforcing fibres 9 to assist bonding between them. The fibres may be of glass, carbon, boron, textile or metal and the resin an epoxide or polyester. The supporting ties are of metal or fibre-reinforced resin and have an E-modulus greater than 200,000 kg./cm., the outer tie being recessed at 6 to receive the string- ing. The frame is covered with layers 7, 7g and 8 of a plastics material, e.g. ABS. A stiffening strip 12 is provided for the forked handle section and the outer side of the connecting section 21, and the strip may be extended either singly or doubly down the centre of the handle, with or without a stiffening insert (13) of plastics, wood or metal (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). The triangular recess between the frame and forked handle section may be filled with an insert of metal, wood or plastics.
