The suspension rail has a 'U' shaped profile. One leg forms, with a stay, a sliding wedge opening outwards. The leg (12) has the stay (16) part of the suspension rail (10) parallel to the legs (12, 14) so that the end section extends beyond the stay (16) of the suspension rail (10). The stacked material (24) is moved by the knife element (55) on to the supported suspension rail (10) in such a way that the end section of the material is bent over by about 90 degrees whilst making a folding strip. The folding strip is then turned over by a further angle during the insertion of the knife element (55) with its folding edge forward in the wedge opening (22) between the legs (12, 14) of the suspension rail. The folding strip is held in the angle space between stay (16) and leg (12) during withdrawal of the knife element.
