The crank press has a bed (2) for a workpiece (C) and a stationary lower working tool D and a movable upper working tool (D). It is operated by a crank shaft (6) with a flywheel (7) via a pitman linkage (10) articulated to the crank shaft (6) and a lever (11) to the tool slide. The slide effects its working stroke by a power cylinder (12) with shock absorber (20). If the slide is subjected to a greater force than the rated limit it will stop short of its lowermost position. The cylinder (12) will move to the left a distance equal to the deformation of the shock absorber (20) and the crank shaft will pass B.
