The air-fuel mixture is compressed in the combustion chamber during the compression stroke in the usual way, and the sparking plug is energised before TDC. The ignition instant is gradually advanced with increasing speed up to the rated speed at which the engine delivers maximum power. When speed increases above the rated speed, the ignition instant is sharply and continuously retarded. The ignition circuit has diodes (3, 5, 10, 11) a thyristor (8) and a Zener diode (15) on the LV side of the transistor (6). The control system contains two transformers (9, 14) and coils (1, 2).
