Electroslag remelting system - with screened electrode by light-weight disc floating on slag for better thermal efficiency

In an electroslag remelting process the electrode is screened only after the slag has become liquefied and a molten pool of metal has been produced. A disc with a central hole for the electrode is lowered on the surface of the bath so that it floats on the slag without touching the molten metal. The material of the disc has a lower density than the slag but a better conductivity. This improves the efficiency of the electroslag remelting process because the heat produces is entirely used for melting the electrode and heating the bath. The oxidation of easily oxidisable elements in the metal is eliminated.
