1473750 Motor vehicle engine mountings; suspensions AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT and REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT 20 May 1975 [27 May 1974] 21370/75 Headings B7H and B7D In a motor vehicle having front and/or rear suspension units 7 connected to the vehicle body through rubber elements 13 and an engine 1 supported by rubber mountings 22, excessive movement of the engine 1 on its mountings 22 due to suspension shocks is prevented by arranging that each engine mounting 22 acts on the body through a variable volume chamber 18 connected by a pipe 17 to a second chamber 15 having a movable lower wall formed by the rubber element 13 of the adjacent suspension unit 7, the chambers 15, 18 and the pipes 17 being filled with an incompressible fluid. Each engine mounting 22 is secured to a plate 21 carried by a rod 20 fixed to a resilient member 19 forming the upper wall of the chamber 18. Each rubber element 13 is bonded to a flange 14 which is mounted on the body and to a sleeve 12 secured on the piston-rod 8 of the shock absorber 7 by a nut 11. A flange 12a on the sleeve 12 co-operates with the rubber element 13 to limit downward movement of the piston-rod 8, and a bead 13a on the element 13 co-operates with a spring seat 10 provided on the rod 8 for a coil spring 6 to limit upward movement. By suitably dimensioning the variable volume chambers 15, 18 and inclining the axes of the engine mountings vertical and angular accelerations produced by road shocks can be made equal for the body and the engine. In a modification the coil springs 6 act directly on the body in parallel with the rubber elements 13 and springs act between the engine and the body in parallel with the mountings 22 so that the variable volume chambers 15, 18 do not carry static loads. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the variable volume chambers supporting the engine mountings are interconnected by a pipe incorporating an adjustable flow restriction. Rubber bags may be located in the variable volume chambers to contain the incompressible fluid. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the invention is applied to a vehicle having leading arm front suspensions with horizontally disposed shock absorbers.
