PURPOSE:To produce the device at a low cost by setting a Pd-Rh catalyst on the inlet side of the catalytic converter for pufifying the exhaust gas from an automobile and a Rh-Pt or Rh-Pt-Pd catalyst on the outlet side and specifying the ratio of the volume of the former catalyst to that of the latter catalyst to (1:8)-(3:1). CONSTITUTION:Plural catalyst are packed in the catalytic converter for purifying the exhaust gas. In this case, a catalyst contg. palladium and rhodium is arrange on the exhaust gas inlet side, and a catalyst contg. rhodium, platinum or rhodium, platinum and palladium us arranged on the outlet side. The ratio of the volume of the catalyst on the inlet side to that of the catalyst on the outlet side is controlled to (1:8)-(3:1). By this method, low-temp. ignitable property is exhibited under conditions where the exhaust gas temp. is decreased, the performance for purifying the exhaust gas rich in HC is enhanced, the performance is improved even with inexpensive Pd used, and the reduction in cost is attained. |
