The invention provides a linear motion device which electromechanically moves an element in a step-by-step manner. A mechanical interlock arrangement is included with the device to prevent the element from being released upon the occurrence of a sudden interruption of electrical power. Thus, a linear motion device is disclosed which fails safe by retaining the element.
