The tank is constructed from thin metal sheets, rectangular or any other geometic shape, their edges joined together by welding. The sheets are made from alloy steels containing nickel and chromium, or from special aluminium alloys, to withstand the cryogenic temperatures involved. Each plate has, formed into its surface, a number of concentric annular rings arranged about the geometric centre of the sheet. These rings have a rounded profile and are produced by standard sheet metal working techniques; their function is to absorb mechanical stresses and provide stiffening. Each sheet is anchored at its geometric centre to the surrounding structure.
|
