By melting zinconyl chloride optionally with a stabilizer and reacting the chloride with gaseous ammonia, evaporating off water and, if appropriate, hydrogen chloride, subliming ammonium chloride at elevated temperature, calcining the reaction product and optionally milling the calcined product, an unstabilized or stabilized zirconium dioxide powder having good properties can be prepared. The process avoids the use of aqueous solutions and the isolation of precipitates which constitute major disadvantages of known processes. The zirconium dioxide powder so produced is highly homogenous and suitable for the production of sintered articles which can be subjected to high mechanical and/or thermal stresses. |
