Colour photographic recording material with light-sensitive Ag halide emulsion(s) contains a colour coupler (I) of the acylacetylamine, 5-pyrazolone, phenol or 1-naphthol-2-carbonamide type, having phosphonic diester gp(s). The material is used in the negative-positive and reversal processes. (I) can be used as both 4- and 2-equiv. couplers. They are readily soluble in the usual high-boiling org. solvents, compatible with water, stable and fast to migration. They can be mfd. easily and give dyes with excellent light fastness and favourable spectral absorption. (I) are new cpds., which can be prepd. by conventional methods. In an example, a coupler of the formula: Ph COCH2CONH-Phi-(CH2)3PO(OEt)2 (in which Phi is p-phenylene) was prepd. from H2N-Phi-(CH2)3PO(OEt)2 and PhCOCH2COOMe.
