Caryophyllene (I) and longifolene (II) and their mixts. are isomerised and polymerised at -20 degrees to +70 degrees C by contact with a Friedel-crafts catalyst or a Ziegler catalyst. Prods. may be used in perfumery, glues and adhesives. In the example, caryophyllene (99% pure) in toluene was treated with AlCl3. The prod. was treated with HCl, washed, and the solvent evapd., Distn. gave clovene and 80% of a polymer, mol. wt. 510.
