Hydrogen is made from water by redn. at a temp. T1 with the aid of a substance (I). The H2 obtd. is removed and the oxide formed is decomposed at a temp. T2 to regenerate the substance. (I) provide a min. concn. ratio H2:H2O of 10 at temp. T1; and T2 is 2000-2600 degrees K. Pref. substances (I) are (a) FeO, where T2 is 2400 degrees K; or (b) molybdenum, where T2 is 2500 degrees K. The process is pref. undertaken in >=1 container heated by solar energy. H2 can be made from water using relatively low temps. obtd. e.g. by heat from a nuclear reactor, but the systems used are long and complicated. By using solar energy, e.g. a solar furnace, simple, fast cycles can be employed and a yield of 90% obtd.
|
