Piston rod with adjustable big end - has eccentric bearing mounting with hydraulic adjustment of bearing position

The adjustment of the big end of the connecting rod allws the clearance between the end and the crankshaft journal to be veried. The rod is for use on I.C. engines with high compression ratios and high thermal efficiency. The advantage of this design is that without altering the piston or the piston head, the compression ratio can be adjusted. The connected rod big end (10) has a sleeve bearing (1) which can be turned hydraulically through 180 deg.. Slots cut in the bearing (3) are connected to hydraulic pressure pipes. One pipe has low pressure fluid and the other (5) has high pressure fluid. The big end fits eccentrically round the journal. Pressures are controlled by a valve.
