Earlier designs of sifters used a closed space divided into three by vertical partitions. All three sections had sieves across, and a closed air circulation - upwards at the centre, downwards at the sides - was induced by axial fans at the lower end of the two side chambers. Regulating such fans by throttling them reduces their efficiency. In the improved design an extra chamber is installed at the rear of each fan. Part of the draught will then spead itself idly passing round a baffle plate in these rear chambers. The quantity will depend on the position of the adjustable plate.
