Geothermal energy is utilised using two thermally insulated pipes sunk deep into the earth. Air is fed down one pipe, which is preferably double-walled with its intermediate chamber evacuated, and is heated through a heat exchanger. The heated air is then fed back to the surface through a similarly insulated pipe to the consumer. The two pipes are located at some distance from one another whereby one pipe is longer than the other. An explosive charge can be used to create an underground chamber between the ends of the two pipes. The heat exchanger, e.g. sintered metal, fills this chamber. The complete system is environmentally acceptable and secure in operation.
|
