Setting and release unit and particularly a tubulating unit for typewriter, calculator or similar office machine has the tabulating slides mounted on a slide rail which can be rotated from a central position to effect setting or releasing of the slides. The slide rail (1) is powered by two independently operated drive levers (5, 8) each with oppositely curved cutouts (6, 9) which interact with a bolt (4) on a transmission lever (21, 23). Moving a lever (5, 8) causes the slide rail to be moved in the setting or release position. Each lever has a tension spring (12) which tends to pull the lever and with it the slide rail back into initial position.
