1472802 Laminating method and apparatus RICOH KK 20 April 1974 [20 April 1973 1 May 1973] 12173/74 Heading B5N A method of applying a protective transparent coating to a sheet comprises: (a) preparing a composite material by forming a release layer on a heat resistant backing layer and then releasably adhering a transparent thermal bonding layer on to the release layer, the thermal bonding layer being polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate or a polyamide; (b) maintaining the composite material so formed in a state of tension; (c) placing said sheet and said composite material together with the thermal bonding layer in face-to-face contact with the sheet; (d) applying heat and pressure to bond the thermal bonding layer to the sheet; and (e) separating both the heat resistant backing layer and the release layer from the thermal bonding layer which remains bonded to the sheet. The sheet may be a photograph, an identification card or a railway pass, the heat resistant backing layer may be polypropylene, an acetate or a fluorocarbon resin, and the release layer may be an acrylic or a silicone resin. An apparatus for effecting the method comprises: (a) first means for making a composite material by forming a release layer on a heat resistant backing layer and then releasably adhering a transparent thermal bonding layer on the release layer; (b) second means for maintaining the resultant composite material in a state of tension; (c) third means for placing the sheet and the composite material together with the thermal bonding layer in face-to-face contact with the sheet; (d) fourth means for applying heat and pressure to bond the thermal bonding layer to the sheet; and (e) fifth means for separating both the heat resistant backing layer and the release layer from the thermal bonding layer. In the embodiment described with reference to Figs. 9 and 10, the composite material from roll 1 having sprocket holes 1a is fed over sprocketed rollers 4 and 5 co-operating with rollers 7 and 8, the rollers 4 and 5 maintaining the portion 9 of the composite material in tension. Laminating rollers 10 and 11, roller 10 being provided with means for external or internal heating are mounted on shafts 10a, 11a, roller 11 being disposed in a box 12 and means being provided for moving roller 11 in and out of its operative position, means 22 being provided to heat roller 11. In operation, the card 20 forming the sheet material is fed through guide member 32 towards the rollers 10 and 11, a switch being closed to rotate the take-up reel 6 and feed rollers 4 and 5 and also to move roller 11 on to its operating position, the card 20 carrying the bonding layer being ejected on to the receiving table 34 by keeper plate 33 whilst the backing layer and the release layer are wound on to take-up reel 6. |
