1473032 Heat actuated link F J McCABE 14 May 1975 [30 Aug 1974] 20273/75 Heading G1D [Also in Division E2] A heat actuated link for forming part of a fire fighting system, comprises a releasable member 18 and gripping means for retaining the member 18 when in a first configuration and for releasing the member 18 when in a second configuration, the gripping means comprising heat responsive means which causes the gripping means to move to the first configuration at a pre-selected ambient temperature, and to move to the second configuration in response to a pre-selected increase in ambient temperature, the heat responsive means comprising means for mechanically amplifying the response of the gripping means to the increase in ambient temperature. In the embodiment shown, the heat responsive means comprises a serpentine bimetallic element 14, the free end of the element being provided with a bevelled pin 20 which, in the first configuration passes through an aperture in portion 26 of the retaining means to abut or substantially abut striker portion 57 and thereby retain the releasable member. The phantom configuration is taken up after a temperature rise, the temperature increase required being dependant upon the amount by which portion 30 overlaps portion 28, the larger the overlap the smaller the required temperature increase. The bimetallic element may, Fig. 4 (not shown) be enclosed, heating thereof being effected by a electric means, a spring contact thereof abutting the bimetallic element throughout heating thereof.
