<p>1489369 Universal joints GIUSEPPE RATTI INDUSTRIA OTTICA SpA 18 Dec 1974 [28 May 1974] 54663/74 Heading E2F [Also in Divisions F2 and G2] The side bars 2 of a spectacle frame 1 are each formed as a universally flexible articulated link comprising aspherically curved elements 5 interposed between spacer blocks 13 having correspondingly shaped bearing surfaces on which the elements 5 can turnably slide during flexure of the bar 2, the flexible articulated link assembly i.e. bar 2 being retained together by a central core member 4. The aspherically, curved elements 5 are each generated by rotating a curved arc of radius r about a circle of radius R the axis a-a of which intersects the longitudinal axis of the bar 2 and is positioned parallel and external to the element 5 (Fig. 4). The core may be of circular cross-section (as shown), or, in Fig. 19 (not shown) may be of rectangular cross-section whereby flexure of the flexible link in one plane is minimal compared with flexure in the plane perpendicular to said one plane to obtain different rigidities to flexure of the bar 2 in different directions.
