Solid fuel open fire - has insert in chimney to provide additional convective heating of room air by natural convection

An existing open fireplace has a hearth (2) with a grate above it and a chimney hood (1) at some distance above the hearth. The insert (4) is built in between the hearth and the chimney hood. It has an inside duct (6) which takes smoke and fumes from the fire to the chimney shaft. This duct is surrounded by an outer space (4) which has openings (9) at its lower end communicating directly with the room and an opening at its top leading through a passage (10) formed in the chimney hood back into the room. Room air is drawn through this outer space by natural convection and is heated by the smoke rising through the central duct without direct contact between them.
