Animal feed contains at least one cpd. having an anion chosen from propionate, propionate and acetate and/or butyrate and a cation chosen from H, NH4, Na, K, Cu, Ca, Mg, Zn, Co, Fe and Se when the cpds. are present as the free acid the feed contains 0.15-1.6 (pref. 0.4-0.8) p.b.w. per 10 p.b.w. When present as the Na, NH4, K and/or Ca salts the feed contains 0.15-1.2 p.b.w. per 10 p.b.w. feed. The other cations may be present in quantities less than 500 ppm. The proportion of supplementary cpds. in the total feed is represented by the formula n1 +2n2 =1.6 (where n1 is p.b.w. of propionic acid per 10 p.b.w. feed, n2 is p.b.w. of salts or other acids per 5 p.b.w. of feed). |
