The high-ratio compressor has one or more free pistons in a cylinder with inlet and exhaust ports with valves, and means for driving the pistons. It has two pistons (6,8) fixed together and working in separate cylinders (5,7). The exhaust (14) of the first is connected to the inlet (12) of the second, and one or both cylinders may have a fluid cushion in the compression chamber between the piston and the base of the cylinder. Typically, the cushion can be in the low-pressure cylinder, and the compressor can be driven by a single linear motor. The linear motor can compress a spring whose tendency is to compress the cushion.
