An exothermic reduction-deposited metal cload coating is produced on a planar surface of a metal substrate by supporting the substrate on a bed of insulating refractory material, forming a metal deposition zones by enclosing the substrate with a solid refractory wall, surrounding the zones with a second insulating material to provide a sealing medium to contain any fluid cladding reaction products escaping from the solid wall, and igniting a particulate exothermic cladding material on the substrate surface to be clad. Used for cladding using the aluminothermic reduction process for steel substrates. The migration of any molten reaction product is immediately halted. The containment apparatus for the cladding process is easily installed, removed and does not require an exact fit. It is also reusable, Carbon picking by low C steels is prevented during the cladding process.
|
