Cultivated plants, e.g. wheat, barley, rye, oats, maize, sorghum and rice, are made resistant to any possible phytotoxic activity of N-phenyl urea herbicides by coating their seeds, before sowing, with an effective but non-phytotoxic conc. of 1,8-naphthalic acid anhydride (A) pref. 0.1-10 (0.5-2) wt %/wt. seeds. Herbicidal N-phenyl ureas which can then be used are of formula (I): (where X1 is haloalkoxy or haloalkyl and X2 is H or Cl or X1 is H or Cl and X2 is 1-2 C haloalkoxy or haloalkyl, and R is H, Me or MeO). They may be used for pre- or post-emergent application.
|
