Process, e.g. for off-shore oil drilling and prodn. installations, comprises supplying (i) a gas to a weld chamber located immovably below the water in order to create a gas environment in the zone where weld metal is to be deposited; and (ii) a continuous, consumable arc weld wire to that zone the wire comprising a tube contg. a metal powder, and partic. iron, core, pref. contg. >=1 powerful deoxidant, esp. Al or Mg. The weld wire used is esp. 'Innshield' (R.T.M.) which generates an unusually large quantity of heat. This is of particular value for welding in circumstances where heat is being carried away very rapidly from the welding position, as is the case in under-water locations. The weld wire core may also contain fluxes or slag-formers e.g. CaF2 and BaF2 and arc stabilisers, particularly a salt of an alkali metal and/or a salt of a rear earth. The core can also contain an Li-compound as well as an alloy-forming metal, esp. Ni.
|
