This design of flexible coupling for shafts avoids the need for costly tooling and machining, by constructing all the components in the halves of the coupling from sheet steel. The coupling has two drive faces each consisting of five dogs (31) projecting from a plate (27) which are identical. When assembled face to face the spaces between the dogs are filled with elastic material in the form of plugs. In the present design, each dog is made separately from sheet steel and is attached to the support plate (27) by bonding or welding. Internal (30) and external (28) rims on the plate position the dogs radially and the whole assembly is held in a housing again made from sheet steel. The housing consists of a sleeve (22) carrying a circular plate (24) with a rim (25) which surrounds the support plate rim (28). The two plates (24,27) may be spot welded together and the sleeve a shrink fit on the hub (20) held by the drive shaft. If desired, the sleeve may be omitted and the plate (24) extended beyond the rim to form a flange for bolting to e.g. a flywheel.
|
