An alcoholic beverage is dispensed from a normally upright bottle by holding the bottle (14) in the hand, tilting it into a pouring position, and returning it to the upright position. Code signs are marked at the pour opening of the bottle. A magnetic field is produced, the bottle is held in the hand and tilted, and the pour opening of the bottle is opened in the presence of the magnetic field in response to tilting so that a quantity of beverage can be poured out of the bottle. The code signs on the bottle are read and recorded each time the pour opening is opened, and after reading and recording, the bottle is returned to its upright position.
