The safety belt system is constructed such that the vehicle seat is moved in a predetermined path in relation to the direction of travel of the vehicle. The vehicle seat moves in relation to its mounting frame, and the safety belt is mounted to the frame on either or both sides of the seat. The amount of forward propulsion can be calculated so that obstacles usually causing the most serious injuries are avoided, e.g. the steering column. Recoil brings the seat back to its original position.
