PRODUCTION OF PILE SURFACED MATERIALS

1472405 Finishing fabrics; pile fabrics IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 45226/73 Headings D1K and D1S A pile surfaced material comprising fibrils of a thermoplastic material integrally formed with a sheet of thermoplastic material 1, the sheet being bonded to a backing substrate 2, is heated from the back to a temperature such that and for such time that softening of the thermoplastic material occurs but no substantial collapse of the pile occurs. Preferably, the process is an extension of a process in which the pile surface is formed. As shown, the thermoplastic sheet 1 and the substrate 2 are fed via a feed roll 3 around a heated roll 4 with the sheet 1 against the surface of the roll 4. The roll 3 and a pressure roll 5 holds the sheet and the substrate against the roll 4. The laminate so-formed is pulled away from the roll 4 over a bar 6 and a cold air jet 7 is directed thereon so that the fibrils formed by the adherence of the thermoplastic material to the roll 4 are set to ensure that they remain integral with the thermo plastic material. The pile surfaced material passes around a guide roll 8 and then around a heated roll 9 with the substrate 2 in contact therewith. The roll 9 is at a temperature between 60‹C, preferably 50‹C, and 10‹C, more preferably between 40‹C and 20‹C, below the temperature of the roll 4. Specified thermoplastic materials are ethylene and propylene polymers and copolymers, vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers, styrene polymers and copolymers, polyethylene terephthalate and nylon. Specified materials for the substrate 2 are woven and non-woven textile webs, e.g. hessian, cotton net, glass fibre scrims and linen scrims; paper; metal; and cardboard. The substrate 2 may be perforated to aid adhesion between it and the thermoplastic material. If the thermoplastic material is low density polyethylene, the roll 9 is at a temperature of 120‹C-150‹C.
