1472690 Gas cutting MESSER GRIES- HEIM GmbH 10 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14778/75 Heading B3V A cutting torch machine comprises at least one cutting torch 28 mounted on a sled 32 which is movable towards and away from a workpiece 30 by a nut 36 and spindle 34 drive, and control means 44 for controlling the drive for positioning the torch 28 a predetermined distance from the workpiece 30. After clamping the machine to a movable workpiece 30 to be cut, the spindle 34 is rotated to cause the nut 36 and the sled 32 resting thereon to move towards the workpiece 30 until a spacer 40 contacts the workpiece 30. The nut 36 then continues to move relative to the sled 32 for a limited distance causing a stud 48 attached to the nut 36 to actuate a control member 44 which causes the direction of rotation of the spindle 34 to be reversed and the torch 28 to be moved a predetermined distance away from the workpiece surface. If the machine is positioned to cut a vertically arranged workpiece, the nut 36 is acted upon by a spring 60 or piston and cylinder unit.
