1472516 Electrochemical cells LOCKHEED MISSILES & SPACE CO Inc 30 July 1975 [5 Aug 1974] 31882/75 Heading H1B An electrochemical cell comprises a tubular casing 5, a reactive anode 4 bonded to the interior surface of the casing, a cathode 7 and an aqueous electrolyte 12 which fills the interior cavity of the tubular casing, the electrolyte being caused to flow solely by the heat and gas generated during the operation of the cell. The anode 4 is made of Na, Li or alloys or compounds of such alkali metals and forms on its surface an insulating film 6. The cathode 7 consists of an iron or nickel screen including platinum black or nickel black and expands to maintain contact with the film 6. Two cells 1, 2 are connected by pipes 10, 11 to a central electrolyte reservoir 3 provided with a vent 13 and a water inlet tube 14. The power output of the cells is controlled by using an electronic sensor which detects voltage variations and actuates a solenoid valve to control the rate of addition of water through the pipe 14 to the electrolyte. If it is desired to dry store the cells, the reservoir 3 may be filled with lithium hydroxide monohydrate and the cells activated by the addition of water. |
