Process for treating a transition metal cpd. comprises milling a Ti trihalide (component A) in the presence of 5-75 mol. % (on A) of a Lewis base consisting of an organophorphorus cpd. R1R2R3P(O)a (component B) and either 1-50 mol (on A) of a Ti tetrahalide agent (component C1) and/or 0.2-50 mol. % (on A) of oxidising agent (component C2) in which R1 = alkyl; R2 and R3 = hydrocarbyl and a = 0 or 1. If (C1) is present, the molar amt of organophosphorus cpd. is at least equal to the molar amt. of Ti tetrahalide. ref. A is a TiCl3 aluminium chloride material. B is e.g. tributylphosphine or tributylphosphine oxide. C2 may be oxygen gas, chlorine gas, CCl4, hexachlorocyclopentadiene, SnCl4, PCl5, iodine, etc. Milling is carried out e.g. in a ball mill at -10 to + 100 degrees C for 5-100 hours.
|
