1365195 Cyanoacrylate adhesives INTERCONTINENTAL CHEMICAL CO Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1654/72 Heading C3P Cyanoacrylate adhesives having improved thermal resistance comprise at least one monomeric ester of 2-cyanoacrylic acid and at least 0À1% by weight, preferably 0À25-2%, of maleic anhydride or a substituted derivative thereof. Suitable cyanoacrylates are those of the formula CH 2 =C(CN)-COOR wherein R represents a radical having up to 16 carbon atoms which is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl (e.g. phenyl) or monovalent heterocyclic (e.g. furfuryl) radical, which may optionally be substituted. Preferred maleic anhydrides are those of the formula wherein each R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, represents H, Cl, Br, I, or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkenyl radical having up to 8 carbon atoms. The adhesives generally also contain an anionic polymerization inhibitor, such as SO2, SO 3 , NO, HF or a sultone, and possibly also a free radical polymerization inhibitor such as quinone, hydroquinone, t-butyl catechol and p-methoxyphenol. Other optional components are plasticizers, e.g. alkyl esters of dibasic acids such as sebacic or malonic acid, diaryl ethers or polyurethanes; and thickeners, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, polyethyl methacrylate, poly (alkyl cyanoacrylates), cellulose acetate or butyrate, and polyvinyl methyl ether. |
