<p>1512431 Electrical couplings ELCO CORP 29 April 1975 [30 April 1974] 17816/75 Heading H2E A contact device 10 for making connection to an electrical conductor that is flat and thin, e.g. a flat cable or printed circuit board, comprises a body portion having a terminal portion 14, and at least one rectilinear prong 20 having an end 22 constructed so as to assist penetration of the prong 20 through the flat thin conductor, the device being of a material which permits bending of the or each prong 20. As deser bed, two prongs 20 extend from a bare portion 21, each having a cutting edge 32 defined by chambers 28, 30. Resilient abutment arms 50 extend from the base portion 21. The initially rectilinear prongs 20 are forced through the thin conductor 13 and then bent back by arcuate surfaces 68 of a bending die. Abutments 34 having sharp ends 38 penetrate the lower layer 40 of insulation, and the bent over prongs 20 penetrate the upper layer 39, the abutments 34 and respective prong ends 22 crimping a section of conductor therebetween. The device 10 has an end portion 14 that may, as shown, be formed as a solder tab 16, as a socket (figure 4, not shown), or with a box contact (figure 5, not shown). The contacts may be of copper alloy or phosphor bronze with a coating of gold over nickel.</p> |
