A deep excavation (typically an old quarry) is lined at the bottom with a water-deflecting layer and above this with a water-collecting layer, containing drains for removing any accumulated water. This collecting layer forms the supporting floor for the first layer of waste disposal containers, which are packed close together to form a base for successive layers of similar containers above. Around the sides of the stack of containers placed in the excavation, backfill of non-decomposing material is carried up towards the surface level, here, a series of cover layers provide a surface which enables the area to be restored to its desired previous use. Effective containment within the storage area is achieved.
|
