A winding device for winding roving onto a hollow bobbin supported between two bearings (3) includes a hollow pref. pivotal arm connected to a suction device the bobbin has a circumferential row of first apertures adjacent its end onto which the roving is initially fed by e.g. a traverse guide and a second row of apertures towards the centre the centre of the bobbin. At the commencement of winding the hollow arm pivots so that a semi-cylindrical hood on its free end is located over the second row of apertures whereby the suction with in the hollow arm sets up a reduced pressure within the bobbin. This produces a suction through the first row of apertures so that the roving fed initially onto the bobbin is held against the bobbin for the first few windings of roving on the bobbin. In an automatic winding machine where the bobbin is automatically doffed and donned a tin roving is consistantly fed to and held on the bobbin at the commencement of winding without manual intervention.
