The vehicle lift has four columns with slots in which travel parallel crossbeams supporting a pair of travel rails. A slide works in each column and rests on the end of a cross member, having a supporting arm swinging on a vertical axis between an operating position supporting the vehicle and a rest position clear of it, also a bolt locking it in position on the column. The bolts (47) are coupled together by a cable and pulley mechanism (61-77) with which a common actuator (79) engages, so as to bring them into engagement together with the columns or retract them into the rest position so as to allow the slides to move.
