The process comprises dissolving the coal in suitable solvent and pyrolysing the mixt. is a carbon black furnace. Alternatively, the solvent may be removed and the coal ground to a suitable size for pyrolysis or for direct use as carbon lack. The solvent is highly or for direct use pref. a polycyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon and/or naphthalene, boiling at 240 - 425 degrees C. Used for reinforcement of rubber, printing inks, dry toners, etc. Dependence on petroleum as source of carbon blacks is reduced, and cost is reduced by at least partial substitution of coal for oil.
