Noise redn. system for cooling towers - using a grid of impingement plates preventing direct impact of water drops on the liquid surface

The noise produced by vertically falling water droplets striking the water surface in the collecting basin is lessened by having a grid of angled impingement plates just above the water surface, or alternatively by having a grid of collecting channels just below the tower packing, which lessens the free fall of the droplets. Used for large natural draught water cooling towers or similar drying-cooling units in which liquid droplets fall freely. The considerable noise produced in such large towers is lessened without the need for expensive screening walls. A redn. in pumping power is possible in the embodiment which has a raised collection grid above the tower base.
