A catalyst support, esp. for treating exhaust gases from I.C. engines, in the form of a tubular mesh of reinforced SiO2-contg. fibres comprises (a) multiple layers of thread wound in a helix to form the walls of a tube and cross-wound to form lozenge-shaped passages through the wall of the tube, the thread making up 20-85% of the wt. of the tube and the SiO2-contg. fibres contg. >=18wt.% Al2O3, and (b) a ceramic matrix with a m.pt. of 1000-2800 degrees C and a porosity of 20-70%, (partially) surrounding the fibres without blocking the openings, and making up 15-80% (pref. 30-60%) of the wt. of the tube. |
