Internal combustion engine has a rotary piston engine of epitrochoid construction to act as combustion air compressor. The compressor drive shaft is parallel to and above that of the main engine shaft. The compressor part may be multi staged, in which case an intermediate cooler is necessary. After the final compression stage, the compressed combustion air is passed through an exhaust gas heat exchanger to the main engine intake. The main engine exhaust gases are allowed to finish expanding in a rotary piston type compressor of similar design to the air compressor before being released to atmosphere.
